Bev grew up in an immigrant Chinese family in San Diego where art classes and music lessons were considered non-essential. She went on to earn an Ed.M. at Harvard University and a Ph.D. at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy (formerly the School of Urban & Regional Planning) and began an academic career in aging and public policy. The balancing act of motherhood, wife, career and being a good neighbor led Bev to leave academia and start a bookkeeping business. Working primarily out of her home, her clients ranged from families to small individual-owned businesses to nonprofits. With the variety of clients, Bev tailored her business to fit their needs. One of her first clients was the non-profit artworxLA (formerly The HeArt Project). The mission of artworxLA is to combat “the high school dropout crisis by creatively engaging alternative education high school students”. For over 20 years, Bev worked closely with the executive director to manage the financial aspects of the organization.
Knowing that art is not “non-essential”, Bev was thrilled to be asked to join the Board of the Brentwood Art Center in early 2020. So now in retirement, while she has not yet taken any art classes, Bev is finally taking piano lessons.
